Light and Movement

Abstract Photography

One constant source of exploration for X / 0 has been an investigation of the role of the participant in creation.

Traditionally, Western Art has been broken down into relationships between subject and object; but photography has allowed the emergence of another mode. In these images, the idea of an “objective” reading is challenged, and the agency of the subject is subsumed. Instead, the image becomes an abstract dialog about the participation of the photographer in the process of mediation.

In these images, situations and scenes have been photographed using movement and glowing light, in an attempt to capture universal forms and characteristics immanent in the image-making process. The results range from the clearly discernible to the completely abstracted.
